Why this matters
Diagnose connection failures in a safe order before changing firmware or random controller settings.
How it works
- A device can appear connected to a computer while still not responding because the wrong port is selected, the controller is in an alarm state, an interlock is active or communication/power is unstable.
- Unexpected resets can be caused by communication problems or brief power loss.
- For GRBL devices, the Console is a key place to look for alarms and errors.
Practical workflow
- Confirm the laser is fully powered, not only powered through USB logic voltage.
- Check the selected device profile and serial/network connection.
- Try a known-good, preferably shielded USB cable when applicable.
- Read the Console or machine display for errors and interlocks.
- Only after basic checks, investigate transfer modes, drivers or electrical interference.
What to watch for
- Repeatedly changing firmware values can make a simple cable problem harder to diagnose.
- Some enclosed lasers intentionally refuse to run when a lid/water-flow interlock is open.
