Tool Layers are for construction and positioning geometry that should remain visible in the project but should not be processed by the laser. Typical uses are a material outline, jig pockets, registration lines, centerlines and a keep-out area.
Create a clear two-layer convention
- Use T1 for physical references: material edge, jig outline, fixture location or draggable guidelines.
- Use T2 for planning references: panel boundary, reserved area, notes converted to outlines or a previous sheet layout.
Select the reference objects and click the T1 or T2 color in the palette. In Cuts / Layers, confirm these rows are Tool layers rather than normal numbered output layers. Tool-layer geometry must not have cutting speed/power because it is not intended for output.
Verify the output boundary
- Put the actual engraving and cutting objects on normal output layers.
- Open Preview. Only the intended normal layers should appear as processing moves.
- Use Frame and compare the physical frame with the intended material boundary.
- In Cuts / Layers, inspect the Tool layer's Frame behavior. Tool geometry can affect framing/origin calculations depending on this option and Start From mode.
The expected result is: Tool geometry remains visible in the LightBurn project, is absent from laser output in Preview, and contributes to framing only when you deliberately allow it.
