Why this matters
Set a reusable origin on supported machines so jobs can return to a known material or jig reference even after jogging elsewhere.
How it works
- User Origin behaves similarly to Current Position but stores a custom reference point instead of using wherever the head happens to be at Start.
- GCode devices commonly use Set Origin in the Move Window; some DSP controllers provide an Origin button on the machine.
- Job Origin still controls which part of the job is positioned relative to the stored origin.
Practical workflow
- Jog to a physical jig or material reference you can reproduce.
- Set the User Origin using the method supported by your controller.
- Choose the appropriate Job Origin point.
- Jog away and use Go to Origin to verify that the reference is repeatable.
- Frame the actual job before production.
What to watch for
- A User Origin is only useful when the physical material/jig reference is also repeatable.
- Clearing or resetting origins changes the workflow; document shop procedures for shared machines.
