Why this matters
Apply multiple cut or engraving settings to the same geometry without duplicating the object, and understand the ordering and compatibility implications.
How it works
- Sub-Layers allow multiple cut/engraving settings to be attached to the same layer geometry.
- LightBurn supports multiple Sub-Layers and each can have its own settings and Output state.
- Sub-Layer order matters because the operations are applied in the displayed order.
Practical workflow
- Use Sub-Layers only when repeated operations genuinely belong to the same geometry.
- Name or document the purpose of each Sub-Layer.
- Check Output independently for every Sub-Layer.
- Preview the complete sequence, including repeated processing of the same shape.
- Test file compatibility before relying on Sub-Layers in older LightBurn workflows.
What to watch for
- A hidden or disabled-looking parent layer does not replace checking every Sub-Layer.
- Repeated operations can multiply heat and job time.
- Advanced layer structures are harder to audit months later, so naming and Preview become more important.
